SEO Edinburgh & Scottish Borders

Proper SEO and fishing for customers in the Borders

Search engine optimisation is like fishing because you are using Google to fish for customers. If you're a business in the Borders, Brandwise can help you land a bigger catch.

All Aboard! Choo Choo!

Opened in 2015, the Borders Railway transports you from Edinburgh Waverley to the heart of the Scottish Borders in less than an hour. The hope is that one day it will be extended to Hawick and all the way to Carlisle, but for now the end of the line is Galashiels followed by Tweedbank.

Tweedbank might not be the most obvious choice for a day out, but it is only a few miles from the rugby-mad market town of Melrose and barely a mile from the tourist attraction of Abbotsford, the former home of Sir Walter Scott. Indeed, the Borders Railway ends with Sir Walter Scott, and it begins with him too because Edinburgh's Waverley station is named after one of his novels.

Abbotsford is set in beautiful gardens on the banks of the Tweed, a river as famous as Scott himself. Not only does it lend its name to the rough, woollen fabric, the River Tweed is also one of the great salmon rivers, attracting anglers from all over the world to fish in its waters.

And if you're not one for waders, you can still meet the king of fish. There is a fabulous salmon viewing centre at Philiphaugh, Selkirk. The best time to see salmon is in the early morning or evening during the months of May and June and again between September and November. For those who prefer the comfort of indoors to the great outdoors, The River Tweed Salmon Fishing Museum can be found in Kelso.

The ones that got away

That's me done my bit for tourism in the Scottish Borders, but what I’m really here to talk about is Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO, and what it can do for your website. But what links the two is salmon because SEO is a lot like fishing.

Imagine for a moment that your website is an angler.

Not only is your website an angler, the rivers are search engines and the fish are search engine users. Your web pages are the rods with hooks that catch the fish.

Like all good anglers, you know the best fishing spots are found on the first page of search engine results for keywords relevant to your business. And it’s your job to ensure that your rods are cast as high up those first pages as possible - or another website is going to beat you to the fish. And if that happens you are left twiddling your thumbs, ruing the ones that got away.

Sure, if you find yourself fishing on page two or page ten, you might get lucky and catch the odd fish, but the biggest catches will always be landed by the those fishing on the first page.

So what does it take to get to the best fishing spots so that you can claim your fair share of the day’s catch? Bait.

And what provides the bait to maximise your chances of catching those fish? SEO.

Reel them in with Proper SEO

The last time I caught a fish, it was a stickleback in a net when I was knee-high to a grasshopper. An angler I'm not, but I do know SEO.

We can bait your pages so that Google and other search engines rank them highly. And the higher your pages rank, the more visitors you attract to your website, and the more chances you have of creating customers.

The magic here is that each hook we place in the water can catch an unlimited number of fish. The same bait works time and again. It’s like television. The fact that you are watching a programme doesn’t mean that your neighbour can’t watch the same programme. Millions of people can watch the same programme simultaneously.

We call what we do Proper SEO (PSEO) because we use the very best ethical strategies to get your website ranking.

Proper SEO encompasses the three pillars of optimisation:

  • Technical SEO - SEO that takes place behind the scenes of your website.

  • On-Page SEO - This involves optimising the content of web pages so that they are both search-engine and customer friendly.

  • Off-Page SEO - SEO that supports your website from afar such as directory listings and links from other websites.

  • We also understand that increased traffic alone isn't the answer. You need to convert that traffic into customers to be successful. That's why we wouldn't be doing our job if Proper SEO didn't also include elements of CRO, Conversion Rate Optimisation.

And we're so confident that Proper SEO will work for your business, we don't ask you to sign long contracts. In fact we don't do contracts. We know you will stay with us as long as we help you land more fish.
